So in celebration of our anniversary last weekend, we headed out to Purcellville, VA to check out a few breweries that we had not been to before. After a long, winding, back-roads, Deliverance-like trip we ended at Old 690 brewery, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Right off the bat we saw the food truck and the dog Frisbee competition and said ‘this was going to be fun’. Inside, we were warmly greeted and before we could speak our order, the gentlemen asked if we all wanted flights. How right he was. To pick 1 beer for a review was hard as a majority of them were well established, but I had not done a smoked beer review before, so this seemed like the perfect time to get one under my belt.
Stoner Point Smoked Beer, Old 690 Brewing Company (Purcellville, VA)
Smoked Beer, ABV: 5.1%, IBU: 34
Presentation: Tap pour into tasting glass, which was setting next to about 10 other tasting glasses. Yikes.
Appearance: Copperish clear color, yellowish off white head that didn’t stand long after pour at tap and well gone by tasting.
Smell: Medium smokey & bready notes.
Taste: It was a long debate that ended in a handshake of agreement that the meat it closely resembled was kielbasa. Yes, this was a beer that started off with some mild bread notes that moved into medium heavy smoke notes that tasted like Polish sausage. The Super Fans would have only been so proud.
ABV/IBU Feel: The overall beer taste was very savory, so your mouthfeel was about the same. The smoke really carried throughout the tasting. ABV and IBU feels were minimal at best, as apart from the smoke, it was a clean crisp ale.
Overall: This is a definite destination for those who are accustom to hunting for breweries or wineries in Northern Virginia and along I-64/81. You have that feel of accomplishment for finding it if you have never been there, and with a solid 11+ beers on tap, it is well worth the drive for the variety. As for the beer, smoked beers are a beast amongst themselves. I like beer and meat, and I have rarely had one that you couldn’t hark back to an outdoor cooking experience. This one wasn’t as pronounced as some, but the medium smoke level opened a door to a whole different spectrum of flavor, which was very enjoyable. Great job.
